Remembering our heroes

Young Tyler Jones places a poppy wreath at the memorial carrying Aaron Lewis’s name as the nation paused to commemorate its fallen heroes this week.

He was accompanied by dad Simon – an ALF trustee – at the tribute to the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery in Plymouth, Devon.

Aaron, a member of the unit, was killed in Afghanistan in December 2008. In the year that followed, his family and friends raised tens of thousands for good causes and provided a significant donation towards the Commando Gunner Memorial.

It bares the names of all the soldiers killed in action while serving with the regiment since it was formed in 1962. It was officially unveiled in January 2011.

Fellow ALF trustee Lt Col (Retd) Steve Fraser MBE said of the image: “It’s a timely reminder of why we are here.”
