About the Aaron Lewis Award
The Award was inspired by a self-funded trip Aaron took to Borneo and Malaysia aged 22 – just before he began Officer training at The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. The aim of his trip was to help build a school, and it was a period of his life that Aaron often spoke of with fondness for both the experiences he had and the people he met while away.
The ALF is committed to supporting ambitious young students in their pursuit of a charitable and personal development activity by offering support with funding. Since 2012 this has been available to any student in Essex planning a national or international volunteering activity. The scheme was re-launched in 2025 for nominated students attending an organised overseas volunteering event from King John Academy, Benfleet and is administered by a member of school staff and the ALF Trustees.
ABOUT THE AARON LEWIS AWARD
Previous recipients have all had similarly amazing experiences and have been extremely appreciative of the support provided to them by the ALF; many remain in contact with the Trustees and attend ALF events:
- Daniella went to Sri Lanka to support and teach local underprivileged children.
- Lynette and Rachel travelled to Malawi in Africa on teaching and medical placements respectively. Both were able to greatly help the local community with their voluntary work, and were deeply shocked by how the locals were treated and the living conditions they witnessed.
- Hollie also carried out a medical placement in Cambodia, providing support in some of the most deprived parts of a country that would otherwise suffer further without the support of the voluntary missions.
- Luci travelled to Cape Town, South Africa, to support local children with sports, activities and teaching.
