It seems hard to believe that 17 years have passed since the tragic events of 15 December 2008. For Aaron’s family and friends, especially at this time of year, it sadly still feels like yesterday.
Aaron was a talented, funny, highly respected Commando Officer serving alongside the best of the best. He embodied moral goodness at a time and in a place where that had been long missing. The Christmas period for those serving at home or overseas is always hard because you are away from loved ones. However, it also offers a unique opportunity for reflection and fellowship among equally isolated friends and colleagues. Sadly, Aaron did not live to see the incredible outpouring of kindness through the gifts that his family and strangers at home bestowed upon him and the troops in Afghanistan at Christmas in 2008. He did however know he was loved and admired as the parcels miraculously made their way out to go under his tree at his remote location in Helmand.
Since that dreadful day another miracle has taken place, and it is the Foundation that bears his name. It has brought hope and joy to over 110 individuals and 37 groups through sporting, welfare and medical equipment, training and courses, specialist care and home adaptations totalling nearly £350,000. None of that will bring Aaron back, but it does offer hope for those who give their support in Aaron’s name that his courage and sacrifice has helped to make a troubled world just that bit better.
