Following a personal referral from a national veteran’s charity, the ALF have provided a battery assisted hybrid handbike to an Army Catering Corps veteran in Devon.
Above knee amputee Nick had been offered the chance to ride with a group of veterans in the Southwest but was conscious of the cost and complexity of getting mobile. After discussing his needs with Draft Wheelchairs, they were able to provide a hybrid handbike that was light enough for him to get in and out of his car but had the hybrid power boost to allow him to ride along with the bigger, more experienced group.
Nick wrote to the Trustees and Draft Wheelchairs following his first trips out with the Endeavour Cycling Group in Plymouth to state “The bike is awesome. I’ve been out twice with group cycle rides and completed a solo ride near home and have been amazed at how great it is. I’m really enjoying the freedom and the exercise it facilitates. I just have to get used to how the gears work with the power assist now.”
It is a real delight to see Nick back outdoors improving his health and welfare in the company of fellow cycling veterans especially at this time where we remember all of those who have served.
