ALF FUNDS LARGE PLAYER RUGBY WHEELCHAIR

Article by Natalie Law

The Aaron Lewis Foundation has has worked in partnership with Endeavour Wheelchair Rugby Director, Roch Rochester, to provide a large player rugby wheelchair for the Endeavour Punishers (all veterans) team.

The chair was originally requested for an individual disabled player in the team but has now been used extensively by a number of larger players who were struggling with normal sized chairs. Rich wrote to ALF Trustee Steve Fraser to say “Working with ROMA sports, we have produced an outsized rugby chair that is rated to carry a 26 stone player. Because of the engineering and experience at ROMA the chair has been approved for home nation leagues and has already seen action in the British Championships allowing several larger former players to return to the game.”

“The buzz and feedback from the players has surprised me – I didn’t think that the wider chair seat would make that much of a difference but it has.”

“We have a new player from the RAF who, due to his spinal injuries, has not been able to play a competitive sport or games with his son – they can now enjoy the training sessions together.”

“It is not often as a coach you get a ‘game changer’ but we now have the ability to get some of our mobility impaired veterans who are carrying too much weight (mainly through injury) doing active sport on a regular basis, getting fit and benefitting from renewed social interaction. We are extremely grateful to the ALF for making this possible.”
