Empowering Injured Sailors: A Safer Winter of Training for Richard and Lee

Article by Julia Harvey

The Aaron Lewis Foundation (ALF) has provided two specially adapted dry suits to para-athletes and Army veterans Richard (Roch) Rochester and Lee (Taff) Thomas, enabling them to train and race safely through the winter months. Richard, who is spinally injured and predominantly wheelchair-bound, and Lee, a leg amputee, are both competing in the inclusive para-dinghy sailing series, having already made a successful debut in 2024.

Both athletes have been selected to represent Team Avalon in the RS Venture Connect Class Dinghy Championships, set to take place in Oslo and Oman in 2025. To prepare for these prestigious events, they needed proper equipment to ensure they could train and race fearlessly in challenging winter conditions.

Richard and Lee’s journey began through wheelchair rugby, where they formed a strong bond. Their shared spirit of camaraderie has seamlessly transitioned into their new sport, where they continue to thrive as a team. In para-dinghy sailing, the rules require both the helm and crew to remain seated in specially mounted central positions throughout the race, creating a level playing field for a wide range of para-athletes.

The ALF is proud to support Team Avalon as they train and compete at the highest level. We wish Richard and Lee the best of luck for the 2025 season and look forward to tracking their continued success.
