ALF Funds Veterans Day with DSA

Article by Julia Harvey

The ALF has partnered with the Disabled Sailors Association (DSA) to deliver a sailing day on board a fully accessible roll on-roll off catamaran, The Spirit of Scott Bader. The Trustees were approached by DSA representative Susan Simmons initially to discuss possible support to their plans for another fully accessible boat. However, in talking, it was clear that we could have a more immediate impact by supporting their outreach work with disabled veterans.

Two of the veterans who attended the day had this to say:
“What you do is truly remarkable, the boat and your people are amazing.”
“I felt safe and secure at all times and was gently encouraged to take part in everything, which was as surprising as to be able to do it; such a well thought out boat and great crew.”

DSA Founder and Chairman, Mike Wood MBE, wrote to the Trustees to say:
“Thank you for [providing] the funds for us to enable 8 disabled ex-military personnel to sail with the DSA. On behalf of the DSA beneficiaries, I would like to let you know how much your support of our work is appreciated.”

Following the success of this first event, the Trustees have agreed to fund another day this year for a group of veterans who will be travelling to Portsmouth from the Essex area.
